Yes, this summer festival has beer, but it’s really about the dogs. Pupologie’s Cardiff Dog Days of Summer, aptly named, usually happens in August, but this year it’s a bit earlier on July 16 at the Encinitas Community Park.
The 18th annual community event centers on all things canine.

Highlights range from a K-9 obstacle course to demonstrations led by a firefighter and canine search specialist with tips on finding dogs who have run away and rescuing them from burning buildings.

Dozens of pet-related vendors will sell their products and services, ranging from dog hats, leashes and matching dog and human clothing to caricatures and dog photography. Some vendors will offer swag and samples for furry friends to taste. There will be rescue groups, pet adoptions, dog contests, live music, food trucks and a “Libation Lounge” along with some tents for shade.

The Libation Lounge will feature beer, wine and various drinks from local places such as Lost Abbey Boochcraft hard kombucha, Spindrift Spiked and Seaborne Cocktails and !mprov booze-free cocktails. Food trucks and food pop-ups will offer a variety of food, from burgers, pizza and hot dogs on a stick to acai bowls, smoothies, shaved ice and desserts.

As part of the event, the city of Encinitas will run a Pet Health Expo with services such as microchipping, licensing and vaccinations, provided by the San Diego Humane Society.

There will be eight dog contests ranging from Best Looking and Best Dressed to Cutest and Look Alike.

First-place winners get a gift basket with dog food, toys and treats. Ribbons will be awarded for first, second and third place. Register for contests at 9 a.m. the day of the event for $10 per entry.

Pets can be adopted at “Rescue Row” from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., hosted by the Encinitas-based Rancho Coastal Humane Society.

The festival is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 425 Santa Fe Drive. Shuttle service is slated to run from San Dieguito Academy, 800 Santa Fe Drive, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Vendor Village and Libation Lounge will be open until 5 p.m.

Admission is free to the event, presented by Cardiff 101 Main Street and the city of Encinitas. For more information, visit cardiff101.com.
