A motorcyclist was killed Saturday morning, July 4, when he was unable to avoid a collision that happened in front of him on Interstate 5 in Del Mar, according to the California Highway Patrol.

It happened just after 5 a.m. on the northbound freeway near Via De La Valle, the CHP said.

A Honda Accord and a red pickup were involved in the initial crash, according to footage from OnScene TV and a statement released Monday, July 6, by the CHP. That initial collision left the Accord disabled in the roadway.

A 28-year-old Encinitas man riding a Suzuki motorcycle was unable to avoid the Honda, and was thrown from his ride when he struck the car, according to the Highway Patrol.

After landing on the freeway, the rider was struck by a Kia Forte, according to the CHP. He died at the scene.

All northbound traffic was stopped just south of Del Mar Heights Road and taken off the freeway at that exit for the investigation, the CHP said.

A driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI following the crash, OnScene TV reported.
