Sheriff’s deputies find cache of illegal weapons in Encinitas apartment; 2 men arrested

Two men were arrested earlier this month after sheriff’s deputies were called to investigate a report of “multiple dead bodies” at an apartment in Encinitas and instead found a cache of illegal weapons and drugs, the Sheriff’s Department said this week.

The weapons included multiple assault rifles, suppressors, brass knuckles and body armor, sheriff’s Lt. Christopher Lawrence said in a statement Thursday, Jan. 19. Deputies also found methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, Lawrence said.

Sheriff’s deputies received a call about 11 a.m. Jan 9 reporting that a man found several bodies in his apartment on Carol View Drive near Birmingham Drive, Lawrence said.

The deputies did not find any bodies, but instead recovered multiple the weapons that violated state and federal firearms laws, Lawrence said. Detectives obtained a search warrant and seized 28 firearms, silencers, body armor and drugs.

Deputies arrested one of the two men who lived in the apartment the same day as the warrant search, Lawrence said. His roommate, who allegedly owned the guns, was arrested Thursday, Jan. 19.
