Baseball:
• La Costa Canyon went overtime to win an Avocado League West championship.
The Mavericks outlasted Carlsbad 1-0 in 14 innings behind superb pitching on May 11.
Reliever Julian McDonald, who was credited with the victory, struck out five batters and allowed three hits and no walks in three innings.
He was among four Mavericks pitchers who combined for 12 strikeouts while allowing nine hits and three walks.
Starter Brendan Kawaja pitched seven innings of five-hit ball.
Ryan Casper led the Mavericks offensively with four hits.
The Mavericks two days later left nothing to chance in an 11-2 trouncing of Carlsbad in which Micky Moniak had a double and a triple and drove in four runs.
The Mavericks improved to 8-1 in league and 22-4 overall for the season.
• Torrey Pines moved into first place after completing a three-game Palomar League series sweep against Canyon Crest Academy with a 5-0 victory on May 16.
The victory was the Falcons’ fourth straight and 10th in 12 games.
Falcons pitching standout Joshua Sidney came within one out of pitching a no-hitter that was broken up by an infield hit.
He struck out seven batters and allowed one walk in seven shutout innings of one-hit ball.
Christian Gagne was 2 for 2 with a double and two RBI to lead the Falcons offensively. Bennett McCaskill added two hits.
The Falcons opened the series with a 2-0 win on May 12 in which C.J. Stubbs tossed a two-hit shutout.
Stubbs struck out seven batters and allowed no walks.
Two days later, the Falcons defeated CCA 5-2 as Chase Cameron struck out six batters and allowed two runs on 10 hits and no walks in seven innings.
Alex Rejto had three hits in defeat for the Ravens.
The Falcons improved to 11-3 in league and 20-8-1 overall for the season.
The Ravens fell to 3-11 in league and 7-20 overall for the season.
• Red-hot Cathedral Catholic extended its winning streak to nine games with a 7-0 Eastern League victory over Mira Mesa on May 14.
The Dons have shut-out their last three opponents.
Dons starter Brandon Tran, who was credited with the victory, pitched five innings of three-hit ball. He combined with reliever Patrick McLoughlin on a four-hitter.
The victory followed a 3-0 win against Mira Mesa on May 12 in which Sam Miller pitched a struck out eight batters and allowed no walks in a complete game one-hitter.
Jacob Mullin was 4 for 4 with one RBI and two runs scored to lead the Dons offensively.
The Dons improved to 9-1 in league and 18-8 overall for the season.
• Santa Fe Christian defeated Mater Dei Catholic 4-0 in a nonleague game on May 14.
Cole Acosta pitched a four-hit shutout to lead the Eagles. He struck out nine batters and allowed no walks.
Van Coykendall sparked a decisive four-run rally in the bottom of the second inning with a leadoff double.
The Eagles improved to 22-5 overall for the season.
Softball:
• Cathedral Catholic extended its winning streak to eight games with a resounding 22-0 victory over Madison in a Western League game on May 14 that was mercy-ruled after five innings.
Raven LeClair had three hits, including a double and a triple, and four RBI to lead the rout.
Leah Malecha had three hits and three RBI, and Sarai Nui had three hits and drove in two runs.
Tierra Falo had two hits including a home run and three RBI.
Dons starter Megan Faraimo, who was credited with the victory, struck out 10 batters and allowed no walks in four innings of one-hit ball.
The victory followed a 3-1 win against Clairemont two days earlier in which Lauren Meyerson doubled and drove in two runs and Olivia LaQua had two hits.
Dons starter Devyn Magnett, who was credited with the victory, pitched four innings of three-hit ball.
The Dons improved to 11-1 in league and 22-6 overall for the season.
• La Costa Canyon defeated Carlsbad 7-2 in an Avocado League West game on May 14.
Sophia Chapelone had three hits and Shannon Hennessy and Riley Casper each homered to lead the Mavericks. Hennessy drove in three runs and Casper had two RBI.
Hennessy, who was credited with the victory, pitched a complete game three-hitter in which she allowed two runs.
The Mavericks improved to 6-2 in league and 21-5 overall for the season.
• Torrey Pines lost to Poway 4-0 in a Palomar League game on May 13.
The loss followed an 11-1 league win against Mt. Carmel two days earlier in which Alexandra Reges had three hits and three RBI and Cassie Kaelber and Xstaviana Augur each added two hits and two RBI.
Falcons starter Kylie Braunreiter, who was credited with the victory, allowed one run (unearned) on four hits and two walks in six innings.
The Falcons defeated Canyon Crest Academy via forfeit in a May 15 league game.
The Falcons improved to 7-3 in league and 17-8 overall for the season.
Girls lacrosse:
• La Costa Canyon defeated Torrey Pines 11-5 in the San Diego Section championship game on May 16.
Caroline Ricci scored three goals and had one assist to lead the Mavericks.
Rachel Dumiak scored two goals and had one assist, Shannyn Westgarth added two goals and Genesis Lucero contributed three assists.
Mavericks goalie Jenna Soenksen had five saves.
The Mavericks improved their overall record for the season to 20-3. The Falcons fell to 16-6.
