The week in sports: Carmel Valley, Del Mar, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, Solana Beach

Football:

• La Costa Canyon fell behind early but the Mavericks rallied to defeat Trabuco Hills of Mission Viejo (Orange County) 37-21 in a nonleague game on Sept. 4.

The Mavericks trailed 14-0 with less than four minutes remaining in the second quarter when D.J. Sy rushed for a 69-yard score to ignite the comeback.

Mavericks quarterback Tanner Clark scored on a sneak just before halftime to tie the game at 14-14.

Sy completed scoring passes from 15 and 36 yards out in the third quarter, as the Mavericks opened up a quick 28-14 lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

The victory followed a 31-23 loss to Desert Vista (Phoenix, Ariz.) on Aug. 28.

The Mavericks improved their overall record for the season to 1-1.

• A frantic Cathedral Catholic rally came up short as the Dons lost to Oaks Christian of Westlake Village (Ventura County) 35-33 in a nonleague game on Sept. 5.

The Dons trailed 35-7 midway through the third quarter.

The Dons had a chance to tie the game on a two-point conversion in the final minute but an incomplete pass ended an inspired rally.

Dons quarterback Tate Haynes completed 10 of 24 pass attempts for 160 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed for 71 yards on 19 carries.

The Dons fell to 0-2 overall for the season.

• Santa Fe Christian lost to Bishop Diego 29-21 in a nonleague game on Sept. 5.

The Eagles led 21-16 going into the fourth quarter, but were outscored 13-0 the rest of the way.

Eagles quarterback Connor Whitton completed 10 of 18 pass attempts for 141 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

Wide receiver Matthew McRoskey tossed a 48-yard touchdown on a double pass to Caleb Phillips. Phillips caught three passes for 120 yards.

Hank Ontoveros had nine carries for 38 yards and Josh Thompson rushed for 23 yards on two carries.

Phillips led the Eagles defensively with 26 tackles and Bryce Thompson added 14 tackles and one sack.

R.J. Walker contributed an interception for the Eagles.

The loss followed a 39-0 victory over Sweetwater in a nonleague game on Aug. 29.

The Eagles fell to 1-1 overall for the season.

• Torrey Pines lost to Mission Hills 23-0 in a nonleague game on Sept. 4.

The loss followed a 28-7 nonleague victory against Steele Canyon on Aug. 28.

The Falcons fell to 1-1 overall for the season.

Girls volleyball:

• San Dieguito Academy is off to a hot start.

The Mustangs rallied from an early deficit to defeat Ramona 2-1 (21-25, 25-23, 15-11) in the 2015 Las Vegas Invitational tournament championship match on Aug. 29.

The victory was the Mustangs’ eighth straight to start the season.

Sarah Colla had 14 kills to lead the Mustangs and tournament MVP Emily Kimball added eight kills.

Kiani Kerstetter had 15 digs, and Lindsey King and Megan Scherer added 11 and 10 digs, respectively.

Scherer contributed 14 assists and King added eight assists.

King and Scherer were selected to the all-tournament team.

The victory was their fifth of the day.

It followed a 2-0 (25-14, 25-22) victory over Carson in the semifinals in which Colla led the Mustangs with eight kills and Kimball added five kills.

King had 10 assists and Scherer added six assists.

The Mavericks defeated Granite Hills 2-0 (25-16, 26-24) in a quarterfinal match in which Kimball led the way with nine kills and Colla added six kills.

Kimball finished the tournament with 49 kills and eight blocks and eight digs. She compiled an impressive .479 hitting percentage.

Colla had 69 kills, 39 digs and nine aces. She hit .305 for the tournament.

• San Diego Jewish Academy defeated Orange Glen (3-0 25-19, 25-22, 25-21) in a nonleague match on Sept. 1.

The victory followed a 3-1 (16-25, 26-24, 25-21, 25-15) victory over High Tech in a nonleague match on Aug. 27.

The Lions improved to 2-0 overall for the season.

Field hockey:

• Torrey Pines defeated Del Norte 3-0 in a nonleague season opener for both teams on Sept. 2.

Sophia LeRose, Rylie Pope and Ryan Poe each scored one goal to lead the Falcons.

Gabriella “Gabi” Jimenez and Shannone Yogerst each contributed one assist.

Falcons goalie Jaden Watkins had six saves. Watkins was credited with the shutout.

Golf:

• Cathedral Catholic defeated Valhalla 212-242 in a nonleague match at Sycuan Golf Resort on Aug. 31.

Jacqueline Garcia shot a 2-over-par 37 to lead the Dons.
