Blind surfers hit the beach for annual event

Share

Now in its 21st year, a surfing event for the blind and sight-impaired is set for Sept. 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at South Carlsbad State Beach (also known as Ponto Beach).

San Diego’s visually impaired will once again have the opportunity to experience the famous shorelines from a surfer’s point of view as participants are given instruction and assisted in the water by certified surfing instructors.

The Encinitas Lions Club, in partnership with Urban Surf 4Kids, is donating time and expertise to offer surfing instruction to individuals and members from blind centers from Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties.

The Lions will provide transportation and serve breakfast and a BBQ lunch, sponsored by McDonald’s and Hansen’s Surf Shop, to the more than 150 participants.
