Encinitas announces new city manager

The Encinitas City Council on July 8 will consider hiring Karen P. Brust as the next city manager.

A council subcommittee in recent weeks hammered out the city manager contract details, including a $238,000 base salary annually, $500 per month car allowance and $100 cell phone allowance per month.

Sixty-one people applied for the job, and the council in late May selected Brust, pending contract negotiations. Her name was disclosed when the council’s agenda packet was released on July 2.

Brust is the city manager of San Juan Capistrano and the former Del Mar city manager.

Deputy Mayor Catherine Blakespear, who was on the subcommittee with Mayor Kristin Gaspar, said in a statement that Brust is a great choice.

“She believes city government should be a model of sustainability; she has a strong financial background; and as an Olivenhain resident she fundamentally understands community character,” Blakespear said.

The July 8 council meeting starts at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 505 S. Vulcan Avenue.
