• Thursday Family Fun Nights: 4:30-8 p.m. Thursdays, through Aug. 27, San Diego Botanic Garden, 230 Quail Gardens Drive. Free with paid admission/membership.
Families are invited to pack up the kids and enjoy some outdoor fun in the Hamilton Children’s Garden. Live, kid-friendly entertainment is provided from 6-7 p.m. San Diego favorite Zimbeat performs.
• Opening Reception: Cathy Carey, “Vivid Views.” 5-7 p.m. Friday, June 12, Civic Center Gallery, City Hall, 505 S. Vulcan Ave. Free.
The contemporary expressive colorist style of Cathy Carey is a blend of impressionistic brush strokes and symbolic images that impart a sense of emotion and mood. Meet the artist and enjoy refreshments.
• Teen Library Lock-In: 6-9:30 p.m. Friday, June 12, Encinitas Library, 540 Cornish Drive. Free.
An after-hours event just for teens (grades 6-12). Come and experience the library as you never have before. Entertainment, food, a scavenger hunt, challenges, and more. Parental permission required.
• Play: “25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 12, Seaside Center for Spiritual Living, 1613 Lake Drive. Cost: $12, $7 in advance. Call 760-753-5786.
Six youth vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home life, the tweens spell their way through a series of words. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! A delightful den of comedic genius.

Reconnect with friends in San Elijo Lagoon’s south side, featuring riparian woodlands and coastal sage scrub with intimate views of the salt marsh.

A rare opportunity to tour the historical 1887 Derby House, the oldest continuously occupied structure in Encinitas. The three-story home is made of redwood and was built by English cabinet maker E.G. Hammond.
• Pet Health Expo, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, June 13, Encinitas Community Park, 425 Santa Fe Drive. Free.
Enjoy demonstrations, a best trick contest and 20 informational booths with vendors and animal rescue organizations to encourage pet health and wellness. Plus give-aways and prizes.
• Families Making History: Succulents. Noon-4 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday, San Dieguito Heritage Museum, 450 Quail Gardens Drive, Encinitas. Free. Call 760-632-9711.
The Kumeyaay Indians used succulent plants for everything from clothing to shelter to food. Succulents thrive in the dry California climate and require little water. Children will decorate a pot and plant a few succulents to take home, a great activity to showcase their creativity.
• Food and Wine Pairing with the Opera Singing Chef, 1:30-4 p.m. Saturday, June 13, San Diego Botanic Garden, 230 Quail Gardens Drive. Cost: members $35, non-members $42.
Chef Elizabeth’s menu features Tuscan spiced chicken wings; tamales filled with potatoes and cilantro, topped with two tasty salsas, tomatillo and roasted vegetables; and Mexican brownies, made with Ibarra and dark baker’s chocolate. Singing included!

The beloved art gallery and bookstore hosts book signings, literary events, workshops and music performances. Owner Jerry Waddle has fallen on hard times since the last economic recession and is seeking community support to help restore the shop. You are invited to attend the event.
