Encinitas 15-year-old competes with top female surfers

Encinitas resident Malia Faramarzi, 15, held her own last weekend as she was one of 120 surfers from more than 15 countries competing in the Paul Mitchell Supergirl Pro event.

Contested July 22-24 at the Oceanside Pier, the event is the largest female surf contest in the world.

“This is all about women, which is nice because most of the surfing competitions are geared toward men,” Faramarzi’s mother Kristi told the San Diego Union-Tribune. “Women usually get the crappier waves and the lower paychecks. Here, girls are the main attraction.”

Competing in her third straight Supergirl Pro contest — which has been held in Oceanside for the past nine years — the younger Faramarzi scored a 4.56 in the first round and just missed advancing.
