A suspected drunk driver was killed when he stopped his car on Interstate 5 in Encinitas about 3:13 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 1, the California High Patrol (CHP) said.

The driver, a 27-year-old man, came to a stop without lights early Saturday morning in the right lane of the I-5 north just south of Leucadia Boulevard, the CHP said.

He opened his door and was immediately struck from behind by another vehicle traveling about 50 miles per hour, according to the CHP.

Jennifer Ramirez, 38, told the CHP she did not see his car until right before she hit his car. She was not hurt.

The killed driver was suspected of driving under the influence, the CHP said.
