Letter: I support the Welcoming Communities Initiative
I support the Welcoming Communities Initiative
Last week, as I watched the city council discuss the Welcoming Community topic, the saying...“Be the change you wish to see in the world” came to mind. Right now tolerance and compassion seem to be in short supply in many parts of the world, including here in the U.S. But thanks to Deputy Mayor Shaffer and Council members Kranz and Blakespear, Encinitas will set a better example.
Navigating through the variety of programs and services already available can be a difficult task for anyone. The city is well positioned to be a clearing-house for existing resources. Welcoming newcomers will foster better understanding and build a cohesive, vibrant city. Collaborating with other government agencies, social service providers and faith-based organizations will ultimately strengthen the entire community.
What was proposed involves no commitment of new public funds or staff, but could attract donations from philanthropic organizations. What was proposed does involve a statement of values and leadership. A helping hand, a kind word, a smiling face...that’s the Encinitas way.
