Encinitas-based Solana Center for Environmental Innovation received a proclamation from the City of Encinitas March 9 recognizing their innovative waste diversion programs and demonstration projects, which included waste diversion at the 2015 Switchfoot Bro-Am concert and surf-contest on July 11, 2015.

Four metric tons of greenhouse gases were avoided due to Green Team recycling efforts at the 11th annual Switchfoot Bro-Am and Rob Machado Bro Junior on July 11. Solana Center for Environmental Innovation in partnership with the Rob Machado Foundation, with support from the City of Encinitas and Hurley, put together a Green Team of volunteers that diverted a record 2,414 lbs. of event-generated waste.

The proclamation follows Solana Center receiving the Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Award (GEELA) in Sacramento on Jan.19, 2016.

Established in 1993, the GEELA is California’s highest environmental honor and is awarded to individuals, companies and organizations that use sustainable business practices to conserve energy, reduce waste or prevent pollution while contributing to their local economy.
